How to make your laptop battery last longer

Here are the best ways to make your laptop battery last longer.

Change your power profile to Power Saver:

Windows laptops come with the option to change the power profile in the power and sleep settings menu. Select Battery Saver mode to optimize your laptop to focus on efficiency rather than performance. It can go a long way to extend battery life.

Lower the screen brightness:

The bright, high-resolution screen is a major factor in rapidly depleting laptop battery life. While you can't do much about its accuracy once you buy it, you can lower the brightness to make it use as little power as possible. It will make this laptop look more dull, so it's not the best for watching movies or playing games, and it can make it hard to see the screen when you're in a bright environment (especially outdoors) but it's a good way to keep the battery strong and durable.

Turn off the keyboard backlight:

The keyboard backlight is really useful for typing in the dark, but it also requires power, which means it's another source of battery usage. If battery life is important, do your best to switch the keyboard backlight on and off.

Disconnect any external devices you don't need from your computer:

Whether you run it exclusively on your laptop, or use it to charge its internal battery, all of your connected external devices draw power from your laptop. If you have devices like your phone, external hard drives, or external monitors plugged into USB ports on your laptop, they will draw power from them and thus reduce your laptop's battery life. If you are not using it, or you can charge it elsewhere, unplug it to extend your laptop battery.

Always put your laptop in a cool place:

Batteries stay more efficient and last longer when kept near or even slightly below room temperature, so do your best to prevent your laptop from overheating. This means making sure that it's not used in extremely hot rooms or in direct sunlight, and ideally, that the laptop itself has plenty of ventilation to ensure that it can cool its components well enough to avoid excess heat building up inside and thus overheating the battery.

Turn off or hibernate when not in use:

If you're not using your laptop, turn it off or put it to sleep after a short period of inactivity. Even when sitting idle, the device will use up battery life — just because the screen isn't turned off doesn't mean it's slowly getting rid of charge. Turn it off if you are done using it.

Why does a laptop battery last only 30 minutes?

Some laptops have short battery life only because they have powerful components or have a small or aging battery. You can use the above methods to try to extend it, but 30 minutes of battery life may mean that your battery has become ineffective and lost its charge over its lifetime. It may be time to replace the battery or laptop. Instead, leave it plugged in without battery and use it as a normal desktop computer and it will run without battery directly with electricity from the charger.

Can I leave my laptop connected to the charger overnight?

Yes, it's okay to leave your laptop plugged in overnight if you have a modern laptop. Newer devices have built-in circuits to cycle the battery during long charging times to ensure you get the most battery life. For older models, you should check with the manufacturer to see what they recommend. There used to be an old rule of charging 80% and then unplugging, but of course it's almost impossible to do that while you sleep.

Is it bad to leave your laptop plugged in all the time?

The same rules apply as above: It's okay if you have a modern laptop. If you find yourself using your laptop plugged in all the time, consider replacing it with a desktop computer. Obviously, laptops are not like desktops, they are meant to be plugged in all the time and can provide more power for less money.
